Fortwood Historic Renovation

Fortwood Chattanooga

When the renovation of this Fortwood home began, it was taken down to the studs, creating a true blank slate.

That process made it possible to rethink the home’s layout while still honoring the character and proportions that give these historic houses their lasting appeal.

The main floor, once divided into separate rooms, was opened to create a more connected, light-filled living space that supports both everyday life and gathering. Custom millwork drawings guided the design of new wall paneling and coffered ceilings, bringing back a sense of craftsmanship and architectural rhythm throughout the home. The fireplace was given new life and reestablished as a natural focal point—anchoring the space with warmth and purpose.

Throughout the renovation, decisions were made with balance in mind: preserving what felt essential, refining what needed updating, and allowing the home’s history and modern needs to work together. The result is a timeless interior, thoughtfully executed in one of Chattanooga’s most storied neighborhoods.
